Staying true to the spirit of the book

How would you make a documentary that stayed true to the wit, the playfulness, the word play, of The Phantom Tollbooth? This question in response to a great tweet: "if you can play the meta-game with film conventions as Phantom Tollbooth does w/ words & idioms, it'll be fun."
