Kate Feiffer, who last collaborated with her father on My Side of the Car, has written the perfect go-to book for the go-to-sleep impaired. With its lulling tone and gentle, comic cajoling, it has nightly must-read written all over it. Jules Feiffer’s legendary ink lines beautifully capture a nascent human in all his lumpy discontent.

This year, the celebrated children’s book The Phantom Tollbooth turned 50. It’s a fantastic story about a boy named Milo “who didn’t know what to do with himself — not just sometimes, but always.” It’s a book about being bored and uninterested, and discovering a whole new way of looking at, well, just about everything. Five decades later, the book still rings true — perhaps even more than ever, as our kids are constantly bombarded with the next new thing in the hopes of staving off boredom.

The year was 1939, the tail end of the Depression was in sight and the war years were yet to begin. Jules Feiffer, “The Phantom Tollbooth” illustrator who would go on to win a Pulitzer Prize, was 10 years old and desperate for money. So he went to his corner store and asked if there was any job he could do. Turns out, they needed a delivery boy.
